Pet training is not for the faint of heart, except when it comes to kitty indoor litter training. Kitty indoor litter training is usually as simple as setting the new cat in its litter box. Once it knows where the box is, it will return to it again and again without fail. That makes kitty indoor litter training one of the easiest things you’ll ever be able to teach a pet. However, sometimes your training efforts don’t go as planned. Either that or your cat begins to exhibit bad behavior after a long time of going in the box. When this happens you need to really analyze the situation to determine what the problem is. It could be the box, it could be the litter, it could be the cat itself. Try changing things up. Hopefully, you’ll find the problem of why your kitty indoor litter training efforts aren’t working. If that still doesn’t work, you’ll need to take it to the vet as there may be something more serious going on.

    Litter

The main reason why kitty indoor litter training fails is because of the litter you choose. Cats are very picky and if they don’t like the litter you’ve chosen, they will use the bathroom elsewhere. This means they may choose your rug, your furniture or your new shoes. If the litter smells too strongly of perfume or other scents, your cat may not like it. Try changing the type of litter you use. If you’re already using non-scented litter, try moving to a clump litter. If you’re already using clump, try non-clumping litter, and so on. Just changing up the litter may be a big step in making your kitty indoor litter training successful.

    Boxes

Sometimes it’s the box that makes your kitty indoor litter training fail. Try a different sized box. Try going smaller, or larger, or try taking the top off if it’s one of those enclosed boxes. Your cat should feel comfortable with your litter box and sometimes changing the size or style of box makes all the difference.

    Cleanliness

Cats are very clean and if your litter box hasn’t been changed in a while your cat may become angry and may want to go on your shoes or in your bed. Yes, they can be vindictive. So make sure you clean the box often so your cat will want to use it. If possible, get one of those automatic boxes that clean themselves. An automatic sweeper will sift through the litter and will then place the waste in a separate receptacle. You’ll still have to throw the receptacle away eventually, but this is a better option for those people who just can’t stand changing the litter box by themselves.

There are many other reasons why kitty indoor litter training doesn’t work. If nothing you try works, take your cat to the vet because it may have a urinary tract infection, kidney stones or something way more serious may be the underlying cause of your failing kitty indoor litter training.
