Comprehensive Pet information-
May 28th, 2009UncategorizedYou can make your garden attractive to wild birds in many different ways. The best way is to provide the food they love best and a safe place to eat it. Garden bird feeders are ideal for providing food for them. They are especially helpful in the winter months when natural food for the birds is scarce.
Feeding stations can be set up with food to attract different species. Finches are attracted to thistle bird feeders that hold the tiny seeds they love. Tube feeders keep the seeds dry and prevent spillage. You could also use a window bird feeder so that you can watch the birds from inside your home.
You can purchase bird feeders specially designed for woodpeckers, goldfinches and hummingbirds. Find somewhere safe from predators and close to your bird house. Damp encourages mold so check daily that the food is dry. Clean up any spilled food daily to prevent it attracting wasps and ants and other pests.
Food scarcities can occur in other seasons although the winter is the time of greatest danger of starvation for the birds. Birds can be helped during food shortages at any time of the year by putting out food. Put out suitable food for fledglings during the breeding season as they can be severly affected by food shortages.
Pans of water or garden bird baths should be provided to give them a safe place to drink, bathe and preen their feathers. Set out water containers at different levels as some species prefer to drink and bathe at ground level, others prefer above ground containers. Fill shallow containers or pans with water and place away from the noise of birds feeding at your bird feeders. Birds will be attracted by the sounds of water running. Attach a water dripper to your bird bath. It will attract the birds and also prevent mosquitoes breeding in the water.
Providing a natural looking environment in your garden will enhance the sense of security for the birds. You can provide an attractive place for them by letting a small area of the garden grow wild.
